Saturday is a derbyplayer from Kelowna, Canada, who is currently working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Ghana. She got the kids to skate, and we wanted to know more about this!

So, first of all, you are a roller derby player. How and when did you start with Roller Derby?
I started Fresh Meat in Kelowna in the fall of 2011 with the Okanagan Roller Derby league. Honestly, I saw the movie Whip It and was like, “Holy shit, this sport exists?! I NEED to play”…

Where is my motivation?

Yeah yeah, I love roller derby, I love my team, you know that by now (if you read my blogs before). But I didn’t talk about motivation that much. Well, despite my love for the game, sometimes my motivation is…

Blood, skates and tears it was!

DCD - ESRNR

Last december, we, Dom City Dolls, participated in the Dutch Championships, Blood, Skates & Tears in Eindhoven. It was truly awesome! It was the first time our team played a trounament, and it sure is a different cup of tea.…

History of Rock n’ roll dancing

Who wouldn’t want a time machine to travel back to the 50’s? See the people, hear the music and see live Rock n roll dancing? Alas, time machines do not exist, but you can get your piece of 50’s action…

Roller Derby Community

The Roller Derby community… What does that mean? No, really, what does it mean? We sure like to talk a lot about it, in the community. And yes,  there is one. Maybe I am too Dutch, too cynical, to accept…

Let’s Get Dirty

Breakout Run - Desirée

Source: Breakoutrun.nl So as you might remember from my previous posts, I’m quite into roller-derby. But that’s not all! Next to all that checking and blocking, I’m also quite fond of mud- and obstacle runs. You might have heard of…

Stay safe!

Injuries. Everybody hates them. It is the only downside of roller derby – or, now I think of it, every other (contact) sport – I can think of. There is a lot you can do to prevent injuries. I know…

Movie: Waiting for Lightning (2012)

Waiting For Lightning 1

As a skateboarding enthusiast in my teen years, I had heard of Danny Way. He was up there amongst the Untouchables of skateboarding’s golden years – Stacy Peralta, Steve Caballero, Tony Alva, and Rodney Mullen – and when I heard…

Derby: Long live volunteers!

Work-hard-play-hard-225x300

At the beginning of 2013, I became ad interim president of our derby league. I’d  already been our secretary for 2 years, so from that point on I had two volunteer jobs. I loved it, but it was a little…

Derby girls have feelings too.

Tough Girls play derby. At least, that is the image people have. But is it true? Sure, we can handle incoming shoulder checks, and of course we can hit pretty hard ourselves as well. But at the same time, we…

ROLLER DERBY: Injury Time

1010025_10151468202880998_541387456_n

Remember my last article about how tough it was to finally train with the A and B-team? Well, things got even more complicated. It is actually quite a funny story. I was finally able to skate again after finishing my thesis. So I started to train, slowly, and decided to participate during the scrimmage my league organized: Rockcity Rollers versus Rockcity Rollers. So nervous seen as this would be my first public scrimmage. I had bought new and softer cushions a few days before, which I still had to try out. There was no other occasion then during the warm-up before the scrimmage. I actually was the first on the track that day, hours before the actual scrimmage: People told me that different cushions made a big difference, and that I would have to learn how to skate all over again.

Get your freak on in Oslo

If you are not from Norway yourself, Norway is definitely worth visiting! Norway has a rich history in alternative music, especially black metal,  but also a lot of rockabilly.  Also sports wise Norway has a lot to offer, both in…

DERBY: Day of the underdogs

Owh, I know I told you before how deeply in love I am with this crazy, time consuming, sport which has taken over my life. I love my league. I also told you that before. I love our trainings, and…

On- and off track battles

Last weekend I went to a WFTDA tournament, to watch Europe’s finest teams play awesome bouts. When I started playing, some 2,5 years ago, I figured that I would be playing bouts every week by now, but boy, I was…

Rockcity Rollers Eindhoven 3rd Anniversary

So my roller-derby league, the Rockcity Rollers, is about to celebrate their 3rd anniversary. I thought it would be an interesting occasion to take a look into the league’s past, present and future. Who better ask about this than Ilja,…

Life v/s Roller Derby

For two years now, I am fully addicted to the lovely sport called roller derby. The image of the sport is a tough, hard sport that takes over your life. And it is true. But there most certainly is a…

How I Got Into Roller-Derby

I am Desirée. I’m a 23-year old business-student and, more importantly, part of the Fresh Meat at the roller-derby league RockCity Rollers Eindhoven (RCR). You might have read Danielle her report about the first homebout for the Rotterdam Deathrow Honeys…

Roller derby bout report: Cirque du Freak

IMG_5197-8

Rotterdam, March 23rd 2013. It’s bout day! Well, this certainly goes for the Rotterdam Death Row Honeys, who are ready to take on the Roller Derby Metz Club (BE) on this particularly cold Saturday. The wind outside is chilly and…

The e-zine of Cassette Culture does not make any profit. This e-zine is about sharing passion. Making profit by bothering you with banners and ads constantly, does not fit our idea of sharing that passion. Last year we did add…
